Itinerary

Day 1Blantyre - Majete Wildlife Reserve

On arrival at Blantyre International Airport, you will be met by Robin Pope Safaris guide for a road transfer to Mkulumadzi Lodge – a journey of approximately 2.5hours through beautiful scenery, spectacular landscape, colourful local scenes of villages, agriculture as well as bush. The camp is located within Majete Wildlife Reserve, on the confluence of the Shire and Mkulumadzi Rivers, about 70km South West of Blantyre – Southern Malawi.
Majete Wildlife Reserve is Malawi’s only Big 5 Reserve and also one of the largest protected areas and covers an area of over 70,000ha. The reserve is located within the Miombo woodland ecoregion and much of the higher-lying areas in the west of the park are dominated by Miombo/Brachystegia woodland. Mixed Combretum woodlands and mosaics of riparian forest can be found in the East of Majete.
Depending on your arrival time, you may partake in the afternoon activity: perhaps a Game drive or some boating on the Mkulumadzi River.

Room Type: Luxury Bush Chalet
Meal Basis: Full Board, local drinks, water activities (except motorized water sports), Game drives, boating safaris, bush walks, hiking Majete Hill, black rhino tracking, cultural tours, birding trips on the Shire River and game-viewing from a hide, laundry. Guests are free to be as energetic or as idle as they want.

Day 2 - 3Explore Majete Wildlife Reserve

Located on a private concession within Majete Wildlife Reserve, Mkulumadzi Lodge offers guests a chic and contemporary retreat set amidst rugged and untouched bushland. Set on the banks of the Shire River, the lodge, accessible by a footbridge suspended over the Mkulumadzi River, comprises eight spacious chalets, each with private viewing decks offering dramatic and unimpeded views over the confluence of two rivers, the Mkulumadzi and the Shire. The main lodge is an open-fronted space maximising the beautiful river views and taking advantage of some cool shade on the forested banks. It is the perfect combination of splendid isolation and first-class facilities.

Mkulumadzi Lodge is the only luxury accommodation inside Majete Wildlife Reserve and offers both land and water activities: They range from swimming in the pool and dining under the stars to river cruises, game drives and walking safaris as well as cultural interactions. Guests are free to partake in many activities daily or just relax and soak up the sun
Wildlife is abundant and includes the rare black rhino, lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, Nyala, sable, eland and Lichtenstein’s hartebeest. Numerous species of birds grace Majete, including Rock Prancole, Pels Fishing Owl and more.

The Reserve is an impressive example of sustainable development and biodiversity, since 2003 the African Parks Network has worked tirelessly to reintroduce endangered species and protect and preserve Majete’s flora and fauna.
Mkulumadzi is owned and managed by Robin Pope Safaris, which was founded in 1986 and is known for its specialised walking safaris. Standards of accommodation, hospitality, guiding and catering are second to none.

Day 4Majete Wildlife Reserve – Lake Malawi

After leisurely breakfast it is time say Goodbye to the staff at Mkulumadzi Lodge as you are being transferred to Lake Mallawi National Park. This is a road transfer to the Nankumba Peninsula of Lake Malawi. This is recognised as one of the most beautiful shores of the Lake and borders Lake Malawi National Park. This Park was established in order to protect the cichlid fish unique to the area. In 1984 the park was designated a World Heritage Site.

Pumulani is situated on the west side of Nankumba Peninsula at the southern end of Lake Malawi – romantically called the “Lake of Stars”. Overlooking both the lake and exclusively nestled within the Lake Malawi National Park, Pumulani has total seclusion and privacy.
The ten villas are scattered amongst the boulders and trees on the hillside and have cooling grass on the roofs. Each is individual in shape and style, with clean curved lines and all have a spacious bedroom, bathroom and sitting area. The front sliding doors open onto the deck – elevated above the ground giving optimal views and privacy. One of the villas has two bedrooms for family groups and another is designed for honeymooners.
Our remote beach setting is ideal for those who simply want to soak up the sun and swim in the clear blue waters of the lake. For those who prefer to take a dive in the swimming pool, there is an infinity pool near the central dining area with grand views over the lake, as well as another infinity pool on beach level. For those seeking activity, we offer many watersports activities like snorkelling, fishing, sailing, kayaking, waterskiing, wake boarding and fun tube rides (all motorized activities are excluded). At the end of the day climb aboard our dhow and let our experienced local crewmen take you sailing into the sunset. It’s the perfect way to experience the beauty of Lake Malawi.

cichlids. We offer special diving courses at the best diving spots near one of the islands.
For those who are interested in the real Malawian village life, we offer guided walks through one of the local villages.
