Day 5From the City to the Bush

After days of discovering all that cosmopolitan Cape Town has to offer, this morning, drop off your hire car at Cape Town Airport and board your flight to Skukuza Airport in Mpumalanga. On arrival, you will be met and transferred together with fellow guests to Notten’s Bush Camp for the Ultimate bush experience. With only 9 Suites, Notten’s Bush Camp is a small gem situated in the Sabi Sand Game Reserve within the Greater Kruger National Park, known for having one of the richest game populations in the country, the chances of seeing the Big Five: lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant and rhino are excellent. Guests are almost guaranteed sightings of the Big Five and the reserve is famous for incredible leopard sightings.

Family run, the lodge prides itself on generous hospitality that keeps guests returning year after year. Established in 1985 when the family decided to open their home to visitors seeking an authentic safari experience, this Camp is now managed by the fourth generation since its inception. Over the years, Notten’s team has refined the experience and kept abreast of many of the developments in this keenly competitive industry. At the same time, they have resisted specific changes to retain a genuine spirit of safari, allowing for a more significant communion between man and Nature.

On arrival at the lodge, enjoy Welcome drinks while completing the check-in procedures. Afterwards, settle for lunch, and then it is time for a little siesta to unwind before your first safari adventure.
Around 15h30, gather for a decadent high tea during which you will be introduced to your ranger who will share great pointers on how to spot the wild animals in the bush. After your briefing, Board on the lodge 4 x 4 Open Landcruiser before setting off on your first safari drive in the park. The absence of windows and the elevated vantage position allow for excellent photographic opportunities. You will have an amazing chance not only to view the game but also to listen to and smell the African bush and its denizens.
While on Game Drive, you will stop for Sundowners at a magnificent location and toast the splendour of Africa as you watch the sunset. As darkness falls, nocturnal animals of the bush get excited as they celebrate “their dawn “and come out. Your skilled tracker will scan the landscape using a spotlight, which illuminates animals’ eyes. A variety of completely different species can be seen on the night drive back to the lodge. Return to the lodge is usually around 7 pm, allowing time to freshen up before enjoying dinner around a campfire with the sounds of the crackling fire and night noises discussing the afternoon highlights with your ranger and planning the next morning game drive.

Room Type: 2-bedroom Family Suite
Meal Basis: Fully Inclusive (All meals, safaris activities, drinks)

Day 6 - 8On the Safari

At Nottens a typical day begins at about 5h30 with a wake-up call and guests gather either on the wooden deck of the Camp to watch the sunrise or in the “Boma”, under the Marula trees, where tea and coffee together with muffins and rusks are served. Monkeys peer from the branches and watch one’s every move with intent and curiosity. After tea, the guests are taken on an early morning wildlife safari game drive in the open Land Rovers with a ranger and Shangaan tracker.
The game drive traverses the bush on Notten’s land, following the spoor and scent of nocturnal animals and avoiding trees which have been trampled by elephants, but sticking predominantly to the dirt roads that make their way through the bush. Returning from the morning game drive, guests are treated to a hearty “bush feast” on the deck.

In between Game drives, guests are welcome to take part in walking safaris which will provide them with an opportunity to experience the beauty and fascination of Africa’s flora and fauna. Alternatively, you can laze by the pool or indulge in a spa treatment.
While adults are enjoying quality time indulging in body massages and other spa treatments at the lodge, the children will be busy soaking up the sun by the pool or busy with the chef in the kitchen learning how to make their favourite pizza and more. Lunch is served in the dining area around 14h00.

16h00: A high tea is served on the open plan deck before leaving for another game drive. Enjoy this tea whilst watching zebra on the open plain, an elephant taking a “bath” in the waterhole, or a troop of baboons just being their normal selves! High tea consists of Gilly’s selection of tea, coffee, and iced teas. Notten’s famous bread, Notten’s nutty wheat, spinach and feta, or a delicious cheese and sundried tomato accompanied with cheeses, figs and preserved ginger. A variety of meats and pickles. Satisfied, guests leave the tea table and board the Land Rover for the sunset game drive/evening drive. Driving through the bush at night in search of nocturnal predators, eyes are captured by the tracker’s spotlight as he scans the bush. A leopard, a herd of impala, a wary hyena … the element of surprise is always there. Every sound and every movement captures one’s attention. The bush at night has a life of its own.
Back again at the lodge after an exhilarating afternoon of unforgettable bush life. Get ready for dinner and time to share tales around the campfire and make new friends. After another evening under the African stars, enjoy your last night in the wild.

Room Type: 2-bedroom Family Suite
Meal Basis: Fully Inclusive (All meals, safaris activities, drinks)

Massage Treatments: Various massage options are offered to help you relax. A list of treatments is available at reception and needs to be booked 24 hours in advance.

Nature Drive in the Sanctuary
The wildlife in the sanctuary includes Livingstone’s Eland, Blue Wildebeest, Plains Zebra, Giraffe, Nyala, Red Duiker, Steenbok and Grey Duiker. The large flocks of Flamingos and Pelicans are a sight to behold, and all of these animals live in harmony in this conservation paradise
