Blessed with awe-inspiring natural wonders, an abundance of wildlife, huge water bodies and vast open spaces, Zambia offers unforgettable holidays exploring the real Africa.

Tourism in Zambia is mainly concentrated in the South, around the city of Livingstone. This city is located on the banks of the Zambezi River, near the famous Victoria Falls. Because there are relatively few tourists from the Zambian side to these waterfalls, it is much quieter here and one can enjoy more of nature. In addition, the waterfalls of this side are at least as beautiful as the Zimbabwean side. Experts have dubbed South Luangwa to be one of the greatest wildlife sanctuaries in the world, and not without reason. The concentration of animals around the Luangwa River, and its lagoons-like water reserves, is among the most the highest in Africa.

The Luangwa River is the most intact major river system in Africa and is the life-blood of the Park. The Park hosts a wide variety of wildlife, birds and vegetation. There are 60 different animal species and over 400 different bird species in South Luangwa National Park. The only notable exception is the rhino, sadly poached to extinction.

Lake Kariba is the world’s largest man-made lake and reservoir by volume. It lies 1300 kilometres upstream from the Indian Ocean, along the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Best time to travel to Zambia

Zambia has two distinct seasons – the Wet Season or Summer (November to April) which is equivalent to summer, and the Dry Season or Winter (May to October or November) which corresponds to winter.

The dry season is subdivided into the cool dry season (May/June to August), and the hot dry season (September to October/November)

January, February & March– Middle of the wet season, during this time, there are heavy rains and there is water everywhere: this is known as “The Emerald Season” or “Green Season”.

Many lodges close in South Luangwa and Kafue National Park at this time of the year (November to March) due to flooding and the bad state of the road. In the Lower Zambezi, some properties will be also close (December to February) due to the heavy but also for maintenance.

Meanwhile, in South Luangwa NP the lagoons and seasonal waterholes re-fill after the long dry season. Most of the game moves to higher ground, to keep their toes dry, and this is the calving season. Migratory birds are present in abundance. Conveniently, most of the rain tends to fall at night and there will be some spectacular thunderstorms. The majority of the lodges are closed till April (not all of them).

The dry season between June and November is the best time to visit Zambia

The skies are cobalt blue, the days are hot, and the nights are cool. Temperatures can sit anywhere from 23°C to 36°C across the country. Wildlife-spotting opportunities are plentiful during this time too. Walking safari bush camps in and around South Luangwa are open for six months per year during this time. Be prepared for high temperatures during Sep-Oct in the Lower Zambezi and the Luangwa Valley, but if you can take the heat, you’ll see incredible game as animals vie for limited water sources.
