Itinerary

Day 1Johannesburg OR Tambo - Arathusa Safari Lodge

Depart Johannesburg to Arathusa Safari Lodge on a Federal Air Flight and depending on your flight option board on either a 10h30 OR a 12h30.
On arrival at Arathusa Airstrip, you will be welcomed by the lodge’s team and transferred to the lodge.
Enjoy a refreshing drink while completing the check-in procedures. Once you are settled into your suite, depending on your arrival time enjoy lunch or afternoon tea or just take a dip in your refreshing plunge pool (bush-facing suites only) and feel all stresses and strains just melting away in the deep peace of this exclusive destination.

The lodge offers 12 suites divided into 8 waterhole-facing suites and 4 bush-facing suites remotely located within the bush.
The 8-luxury water-facing suites are within Arathusa’s main lodge perimeter. Each room has a bathroom en-suite, with a shower, as well as a private outdoor shower and private verandah overlooking the waterhole
The 4-luxury bush-facing suites are remotely located away from the lodge and afford guests the advantage of privacy within the untamed wilderness. Each room has its own plunge pool and veranda and a lounge area within the extensive open plan unit, as well as an indoor and outdoor shower.

Rejuvenating health and wellness facilities are to complete this luxury Safari Experience. There are no televisions in the rooms at Arathusa. In keeping with the traditional safari experience, the bush is best experienced “al dente”. Guests are however able to make calls from the reception area and send or receive e-mails and faxes. Around 15h30 gather for a decadent High tea during which you will be introduced to your ranger who will share great pointers on how to spot the wild animals in the bush. After your briefing, Board on the lodge 4 x 4 Open Landcruiser before setting off on your first wildlife safari drive. The absence of windows and the elevated vantage position allow for excellent photographic opportunities. You will have an amazing chance not only to view the game but also to listen to and smell the African bush and its denizens.
While on Game Drive, you will stop for Sundowners at a magnificent location and toast the splendour of Africa as you watch the sunset. As darkness falls, nocturnal animals of the bush get excited as they celebrate “their dawn” and come out. Your skilled tracker will scan the landscape using a spotlight, which illuminates animals’ eyes. A variety of completely different species can be seen on the night drive back to the lodge. Arrival at the lodge is usually around 7 pm, allowing time to freshen up before enjoying dinner around a campfire with the sounds of the crackling fire and night noises discussing the afternoon highlights with your ranger and planning for tomorrow’s safari.

Day 2 - 3On the Safari at Arathusa Safari Lodge

Guests visiting Arathusa Safari Lodge are treated to 2 game safari experiences per day. In between, they are encouraged to partake in bush walks and guests are escorted by an armed Ranger. This is an opportunity to experience a whole new side of the African bush… The feeling of walking through the bush is very different and gives another perspective on what the safari experience is about.
When you walk through the bush you are completely immersed in nature, the sound and feel of the safari vehicle are gone and it’s just you and the bush. You can hear the many sounds around you, both near and far – such as the sound of the hooves of zebra running across the plains, or branches breaking as a herd of elephants move in the distance.
While walking, you are also able to focus on many smaller things such as flowers, trees, grass and insects and you will notice how all these things around you, however small, play an integral role in sustaining the natural environment.

Game drives, in an open safari vehicle, are conducted in the early morning and late afternoon every day in search of animals – both large and small. This means that about 8 hours of every day are spent in this natural sanctuary, in search of the creatures who call it home.
Experienced, knowledgeable, and personable guides are paired with local trackers, and together they ensure a first-class safari experience. Trackers sit up at the front of the vehicle looking for fresh animal tracks, while rangers skilfully navigate into ravines and through thickets in pursuit of fantastic game sightings.
Close encounters are guaranteed, and the animals are not threatened by our presence thanks to our sound conservation management policies. Expect one-of-a-kind photographic opportunities of The Big Five, and much more – including over 300 bird species.

Day 4Going Home

Wake up to the hissing of hundreds of crickets preparing for a warm bush day, and enjoy tea or coffee together with muffins, and rusks …. before setting off on your last morning game drive, one last opportunity to experience the magic that only the African Bush can offer!
After a hearty breakfast followed by check-out procedures, it is time to bid farewell to the bush. But there will be time to purchase some memorabilia from the lodge curio shop before being transferred to the lodge airstrip to connect with your federal Air flight back to Johannesburg.
